Held at Squaw Valley Adventure Center’s expansive Ropes Course, this is a powerful and fun team building activity that has an impact. Typically, the ropes course program starts with low to the ground team building activities aimed at icebreaking, bonding, trust building, and working together as a team. These activities build the foundation for the high ropes course events that give participants the opportunity to challenge themselves beyond their “comfort zone.” Each participant chooses his or her own level of challenge and nobody is pressured to climb. It is challenge by choice and there are climbing events suitable and appropriate for very diverse populations – almost anybody who wants to climb can be accommodated. Our findings show that the most effective learning occurs when participants choose to challenge themselves, with each individual measuring success by his or her own standards and goals. A great feature of these programs is that everyone can be involved, regardless of physical fitness, ability, or athletic prowess. At all times during the high events, climbers wear harnesses and helmets, are connected to climbing ropes, and are belayed by another person or are connected to a belay system.
